Edible Landscaping for the Home

I was recently listening to a Texas based homesteading podcast (In the Rabbit Hole). They had Dr. Mark “Merriweather” Vorderbruggen on. He is an expert on foraging for wild edibles in Texas. Part of the show was them discussing good plants for your landscape that are edible. I’m thinking about planting some of these. Others are already in my landscape.

Wild OnionWild onions – These are already growing in my backyard. I’ve often wondered if they were edible. Now I know. It is apparently a good source of vitamin c and you use it for adding flavor.

Turk's Cap

Turk’s Cap – This is a plant that loves shade. The flowers, fruit, and young leaves are edible. The fruit is supposed to take like apples. As a bonus, the bark can be used for cordage.

Cana Lily

Canna Lily – This is actually a very common plant for suburban lawn decoration. The tubers can be used like potatoes.

There are plenty of other plants to check out at http://www.foragingtexas.com/, I recommend you do so. One of the things I like is that the site has plenty of pictures of every plant. This will really help you identify them.
