2015 Garden Plans

Zapotec Tomatoes

I was lax on my gardening last year. I was hit with a very hard and late freeze combined with drought. This caused me to have limited harvests and lose the desire to do much in the garden. I did start filling in the pond/water feature. It was taking to much maintenance and had to many leaks.

This year, I am not going to be that ambitious. I do plan on finishing filling in the pond. I’m hoping to have it ready for planting in time for fall crops. For the spring, I am planning on planting:

  • Potatoes – This is something new for me. I saw a great idea for potato planting that will make harvesting easy. I will use the same wire fencing that I use for tomato cages and grow them inside these cages. I will just have to add straw and compost as the potatoes grow. When I am ready to harvest, I just remove the cage and dig them out. I am planning on growing sweet potatoes and red potatoes.
  • Tomatoes – I’m growing to try to grow a couple of drought resistant heirloom varieties from seed, Zapotec and Rio Grande. The Zapotec tomatoes have the classic folded look of most heirloom tomatoes. The Rio Grande tomatoes appear to be very similar to Roma tomatoes. I’m hoping I will get good harvests this year.

As an aside. I ordered my seeds from an Etsy shop called SmartSeeds. Let’s see how they do.
