Licensing of Handguns Like Cars
Due to the recent tragedy, there are people calling for the licensing of handguns like cars. Aside from the fact that this would not have stopped the event (there was nothing in official government records keeping the shooter from purchasing a firearm), and it still wouldn’t stop criminals from obtaining firearms, let’s go over what would be involved.
- The fees from these licenses would need to go for free public hunting land and ranges. Fees from vehicle registrations go to pay for the building and repair of public roads.
- Licensed fully loaded handguns would be able to go anywhere in public. Licensed vehicles can go anywhere in public with a full tank of gas.
- The licensed handgun would be able to go anywhere in the USA.
- People would be able to buy as many licensed handguns as they could afford.
- People could build whatever handguns they want, as long as they met licensing requirements for handguns.
- Violent felons would be able to license handguns.
Personally, I don’t think licensing handguns like vehicles is a good idea. Now, let’s go over licensing firearm owners like we do car owners:
- A license would mean that you could purchase, own, carry and use firearms anywhere in the USA. This would be just like a car owner.
- You would not need a license to use a firearm on private property with the owner’s permission.
- The very simplest of tests and a small fee would be required to obtain this license. This would include 16 year-olds, with their parents permission.
- Being caught carrying without a license would be a $90 ticket and come off your record in 3 years, just like driving a car.
- Any felon can get a drivers license (there is no background check). Do you really want this for firearms?
I don’t think the people who are saying they want firearms licensed like cars are really thinking about what they are saying. Some aren’t thinking and the rest are covering up what they really want. What they really want is to remove firearms from everyone except the select few who have the political connections to obtain weapons. Cars and trucks can be much deadlier than semi-automatic firearms. Cars and trucks are used in almost as many crimes and cause many more deaths than firearms. Yet, motorized vehicles are less heavily regulated than firearms.
