Another Reason Ethanol Is A Bad Idea
Some U.S. retailers are having to ration grains, cooking oil, and flour
When we burn ethanol in our automobiles, we are burning food. As more crop land is used to grow corn for ethanol, less is used for growing edible corn and wheat. This leads to less food on the world markets and higher prices for food. We are seing the beginnings of shortages in the U.S. and food riots in Haiti, Indonesia, and several African nations. India and Vietnam are sharply curtailing exports of rice (one of the biggest staple crops in the world). Ethanol already reduces gas mileage and increases pollution. Now we can add the fact that it, and other biofuels, increase world hunger. With the continued push for biofuels, I am seriously considering buying in bulk non-perishable food items. Prices will definetely be going up.
