Science’s Biggest Fail
“I think science has earned its lack of credibility with the public. If you kick me in the balls for 20-years, how do you expect me to close my eyes and trust you?” – ScottAdamsThis is so true. Part of the problem is the news media. In the quest for ratings, the headline is “NEW STUDY SHOWS THAT X CAUSES (OR PREVENTS) CANCER!!!!” The study actually showed that x has a correlation with a specific cancer rate. So, all sorts of money is spent on X (including physicians making recommendations). Then, a new study/headline will come out showing the opposite of the headline. This repeats constantly. Now, this does not only apply to matters of health science. We have seen this in other scientific claims involving things like pollution and climate change. I remember when we were supposed to be facing a new ice age to caused by man-made global cooling in the 70s and 80s. In the 90s the woodlands of the northeastern USA were supposed to be stripped bare by acid rain. Most of this was the media blowing what scientist were saying way out of proportion.
